New era for mobile photography with the Nokia 808 Pureview

What does the new Nokia 808 Pureview technology mean for mobile photography?

I have been dreaming of such a phone where I don’t need to take my Contax T3 just to get reasonable quality images. I believe this phone is a game changer and a huge threat to Sony, Olympus, Canon,  Samsung, Nikon and others. Many people will bemoan the use of the dying Symbian platform, but when it will come on Windows (properly implemented - without traditional Microsoft bugs) then it may well become a mainstream product.

Why is the Nokia Pureview technology a game changer?

CaNikon and other camera companies are still looking at photography as it was in the 20th century, a tool for taking pictures. But how many of these cameras, even the point & shoots, allow for accessing the Internet, uploading photos and sharing them? I have not heard of any. We don’t take pictures just for us but to SHARE.

When I take a picture, it is nice to add a personal touch instead of taking the jpeg straight from the camera or the phone, and sharing it on any social media site. That is why Instagram has been a great hit, and is now owned by Facebook. Photoshop is also at risk here as it is catering to the same CaNikon companies.

Now imagine a possible scenario of the future:

1) Windows phone with Pureview tech (coming soon)

2) Instagram in partnership with Silver Efex Pro bundles a pro paid service on top of its free offering

3) Facebook and Instagram are fully integrated

4) Facebook buys off Flickr or better yet partners with Yahoo! because Yahoo! needs a deeper connection to social media.

5) Flickr offers its subscribers the option to sell their images.

Now how does that sound? Look forward to hearing your views.

Best,
